Air Fryer vs. Toaster Oven: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Comparison · September 2026 · Nestwell Team

These two appliances get compared constantly because they genuinely do overlap β€” but each has jobs the other handles noticeably worse.

Where Air Fryers Win

A digital air fryer circulates hot air fast and close to the food, which is what produces a genuinely crisp exterior on things like fries, wings, and reheated pizza β€” closer to fried texture than a conventional oven gets in the same time.

Where Toaster Ovens Win

A toaster oven has more interior height and space, so it handles taller items (a small casserole, a rack of cookies) and traditional baking far better. It's also the better choice for actual toast β€” most air fryer baskets don't toast bread evenly.

The Overlap

Reheating leftovers, roasting a small batch of vegetables, and warming frozen snacks work reasonably well in either appliance β€” this is where personal preference and counter space matter more than performance differences.

Do You Need Both?

If counter space allows for only one: a toaster oven is the more versatile single appliance (it can approximate air frying with a rack, but an air fryer can't bake a casserole). If space allows for both, they end up handling genuinely different weekly tasks rather than duplicating each other.

Neither replaces a full-size oven for large batches β€” both are built around single-portion and small-batch cooking.
