Cooling Sheets vs. Regular Cotton: Do They Actually Work?
"Cooling sheets" get marketed hard every summer, but the honest answer is that some of the effect is real fabric science and some of it is just clever branding on ordinary cotton. Here's how to tell the difference before paying a premium.
What Actually Makes a Sheet Sleep Cooler
Two things matter far more than the marketing copy: weave and fiber. A looser, more breathable weave (like percale) moves air better than a tight, glossy weave (like sateen), regardless of fiber. On fiber, bamboo-derived fabrics genuinely wick moisture well and tend to run cooler than standard cotton β but a well-made percale cotton sheet can outperform a poorly-made "cooling" sheet from an unfamiliar brand.
Thread Count Is Mostly a Red Herring
Beyond roughly 400, higher thread count doesn't reliably mean better quality or more breathability β some very high thread-count claims are achieved with thinner multi-ply yarns that don't actually improve comfort. Weave type and fiber quality matter more than the number on the package.
What Won't Fix a Hot Bed
No sheet fully compensates for a genuinely hot bedroom, a thick comforter stacked on top, or a mattress that traps heat. If you're still overheating after switching sheets, the room temperature or the mattress itself is likely the bigger factor.
